This is an exciting time for Project Chimps, a 236-acre sanctuary nestled among the beautiful mountains of northern Georgia. With the help of many generous donors and founding partners of the sanctuary, and with the incredibly generous support of The Humane Society of the United States, we have launched a ground-breaking project that will eventually provide sanctuary to over 220 chimpanzees in need. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, our main focus (besides caring for the chimpanzee groups that have already arrived at the sanctuary) is fundraising in order to provide the chimpanzee residents with the quality care, nutrition, and enrichment they deserve for the rest of their lives.

We welcomed our first group of chimpanzees on September 8, 2016, and will continue receiving new groups of chimpanzees coming out of labs in phases over time. From the moment these animals leave their laboratory life and begin their trip to Georgia, their lives are changed forever.
Project Chimps was founded in late 2014 by a “super group” of chimpanzee, nonprofit, philanthropic, and legal experts to solve the critical question of what would happen to the hundreds of chimpanzees still left in private biomedical research. After months of negotiations with the University of Louisiana’s New Iberia Research Center (NIRC), Project Chimps secured the agreement to permanently retire all of their chimpanzees. This was a colossal step in the right direction, and we are proud and grateful to NIRC for making this decision for the betterment of the chimpanzees in their care.
There are many chimpanzees in need and we are ready to take on this challenge, but we need support from people like you in order to make it happen. Together, we can change the lives of these chimpanzees, forever.
More information is soon to come, so please sign up for our eNewsletters so you don’t miss out on the most current information about our organization, and follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for daily updates on the chimpanzees’ lives. Thank you for your interest and support!
“Congratulations to the Project Chimps team and its partners on this historic achievement for chimpanzees. I am 100% in support, and am so glad this dream is coming true.”
