Celebrating LUCKY’s 21st birthday!
October 3rd is a busy day in Laurie and Carlee McGrath Chateau because three chimps all share the same birthday — right down to the year! After celebrating fraternal twins Keith and Kevin earlier today, we’re excited to shine a light on Lucky!
Lucky is one of the most recognizable chimps at the sanctuary due to her distinct look. She has a skin condition known as vitiligo, which causes some areas of her skin to appear lighter in color. You might also be able to spot her by looking for a chimp carrying a blanket — especially pink blankets!
Lucky is a big ol’ foodie and loves anything having to do with food! Fruit is her favorite, but she’s someone you can always count on to be waiting in line at mealtimes for whatever fresh produce is on the menu that day. She’s a bit of a “drama queen” and isn’t necessarily the most socially savvy chimp, tending to make choices that end in her being chased by her more rambunctious groupmates — especially Kivuli! He seems to enjoy messing with Lucky because she’s very loud and “just a bit of a diva.”
All the same, Lucky does still spend a good amount of time working on her relationships with the other chimps! She’s known to initiate grooming and play sessions with the males and is especially close to her best friend Chloe. Sometimes, she even lets Chloe have her enrichment items (in exchange for a future food item, of course)!
Lucky and Chloe are often outside exploring the habitat, but they also spend time grooming and resting together inside. Because Chloe can be a slow shifter, Lucky often helps her by bringing Chloe and her blankets through the door. Why does she do this? Likely because she knows they’ll all get their breakfast faster that way!
