Bring Project Chimps Into Your Home(school)
by Megan Hume
We are all trying to find ways to cope with the current changes in our society. We miss our community and we hope that everyone is staying home and taking care of their families and themselves. While you cannot visit Project Chimps right now, you and your family can still be involved and stay connected to the chimps!
If the kids are looking at you with exasperation and you are tired of hearing the constant refrains: “I’m bored!”, “There’s nothing to do!” Here are some fun chimp-themed activities you can do with your kids, whether you are a teacher or not!
Get Outside
Did you know that in the wild, a chimp’s diet consists of almost 50% figs?!? Do you have a fig tree in your yard? Gather up the family for an excursion into the backyard and take some cuttings of your fig tree that you can donate later in the year for us to plant and grow on our property.
You can help us to feed the chimps! Other plants that we can use for both our future food and browse gardens are elderberry, ginger, hibiscus, butterfly bush, gardenia, jasmine, lavender and day lilies.

Guess Who
Have you ever looked at your brothers or sisters and thought about how much alike you look? Do people always comment how much you look like your mom or your dad? We have quite a few family relationships amongst our chimps. Can you tell by looking at them who is related? Have you ever really looked at the physical characteristics of chimpanzees? How can you tell them apart?
Pigmentation, brow lines, facial features and bone structure, all along with careful examination of the eyes, noses and lips can help us to tell the chimps apart. Check out the Meet the Chimps page on our website and see if you can determine some of the family relationships by looking at their physical characteristics. We’ll give you some hints:
- Krystin is ________’s sister.
- ____________ is Buttercup & Charisse’s father.
- Precious is ______________’s mother.
- ___________ is Chloe’s mother.
- Jill is ______________’s mother.
- _______________’s mother is Roxy.
- Moonie is ________________’s mother.
