Sarah

Sarah July 2021

Sarah is very close to her best friends Loretta and Amy. When Loretta is slow to come in from habitat, Sarah is there to give her reassurance. All three girls love their stuffed chimp “babies,” and Sarah often carries multiple with her. She lays with them on her belly, puts them on her head, or walks around with them on her back. In fact, Sarah loves them so much that once, when Harley stole her “baby” away, Sarah was unable to take her chow until she got a new baby.

Recently, Sarah has been bonding more with Collin, one of the males in Harmony. She also loves giant sheets of craft paper. When she finds it, she will go and collect all of it and start to rip it to pieces just for fun!

When chimps come to sanctuary, they may be interacting with other chimps (or chimps of the opposite sex) for the first time. They may fail to understand social norms, and feel awkward, unsure, or anxious around other chimps. These interactions can be tricky because the chimps haven’t learned lessons that mom usually instills during childhood.

This project would not be possible without our many generous individual supporters and volunteers. We rely on donations to fulfill our mission, including caring for our existing residents and expanding the sanctuary to accommodate those chimpanzees still waiting in the lab.
