Binah was born on January 22, 2008 and came to Project Chimps on March 21, 2018. He resided in the Laurie & Carlee McGrath Chateau. After 10 years in a medical research laboratory, he was here at Project Chimps just shy of 8 years.
Binah was just shy of his 18th birthday and had been part of our sanctuary family for nearly eight years. During that time, he made remarkable progress in building positive relationships through play and grooming. Though he could be stubborn, he had been working hard to develop calmer, more thoughtful responses when stepping into group conflicts. Some days were easier for him than others, but watching his growth brought caregivers a deep sense of pride and joy. He was becoming his own kind of mature, grounded chimp—one only Binah could be.
An altercation occurred that afternoon in his group of chimps, during which Binah was quickly rendered unconscious. Our veterinarian, Dr. Jenny, observed that he had stopped breathing, and Binah passed away shortly afterward.
Binah’s remains will be cremated and entombed in our Remembrance Garden off our hiking trails. The memorial site will be marked by a plaque with his name.
Donations made in memory of Binah are welcome and can be made here.
