Jason

Jason July 2021

Jason was born on September 27, 2002 and resided in the Cedar Tree Villa with Bo’s group. After fifteen years in a research lab environment, he arrived in sanctuary on May 17, 2017.

A clever and socially savvy chimp, Jason played an important role within his family group. He navigated group dynamics with remarkable intelligence, earning the trust of his companions and helping maintain harmony among his peers. Yet behind that strategic mind was a sweet and playful soul who loved games with caregivers, playful interactions with fellow chimpanzees, and spending time outdoors.

Jason’s charisma shone through his many quirks. He gave every snack a careful sniff before eating, preferred to receive food indoors rather than from the porch hoppers, and hurled toys with the skill of the sanctuary’s resident ballplayer. Protein powder was one of his favorite treats and helped keep his “pitching arm” in shape.

Following an acute decline in his health, veterinary evaluation revealed an inoperable intussusception of the bowel that had become necrotic.

Jason will be cremated and laid to rest in the sanctuary’s Remembrance Garden along the hiking trails. His life will be honored with a plaque bearing his name—a lasting tribute to a chimpanzee remembered for his intelligence, charm, and joyful spirit.

Donations made in memory of Jason are welcome and can be made here.

Chimp Chatter Featuring Jason

Celebrating JASON’s 22nd birthday!

September 27, 2024

Often, caregivers know Jason is going to come through a door before they can see him! He throws a huge pile of wood wool through the door right before leaping through to the other side.

Meet Jason: Bo’s right-hand man

December 27, 2022

Drama seems to follow Jason. He is currently at work sorting out becoming the new alpha’s right-hand. Jason was a part of Stirlene’s efforts to usurp the current alpha in the group, Bo.

What Does It Mean to Be an “Enforcer”?

Chimps have drama. They have police officers policing the drama. And, apparently, the police officers have “motorcycles.”

Tribute

Jason was a man on the move. He loved his wood wool, rubber buckets, and tiger Lillys. He cared for his group deeply and was eager to protect them.  He could be the life of the party with his sense of play but also demand respect with his poo throwing skills. He defiantly had his quirks, like having to sniff his produce before eating it, but he was loved by all who knew him and his presence will be forever missed by all his primate friends.

This project would not be possible without our many generous individual supporters and volunteers. We rely on donations to fulfill our mission, including caring for our existing residents and expanding the sanctuary to accommodate those chimpanzees still waiting in the lab.
