Visit Chimpanzees in the Mountains

Get a behind the scenes look at chimpanzees living in sanctuary in the Blue Ridge Mountains!

This is a unique opportunity to see some of the chimpanzees and learn about their life in sanctuary. Because we aren't a zoo, you'll see the chimps in a relaxed, peaceful setting, unlike anything you've experienced before. The chimps have access to a 6-acre forest and, while chimp sightings are never guaranteed, they usually like to see who has come to visit!

The walking tour lasts about one hour. You'll also spend time with our sanctuary team and learn more about the amazing lives of chimpanzees!

Tours are limited to ten people and chimps love children (under 5 are free per our policy - this does not match Airbnb so list all children age 5 or younger as 2 when booking)!

Feed Chimps - Lunch Launch Tours

Start with the same standard tour as above, the Lunch Launch experience will immediately follow the tour for an additional 30 minutes. You will be escorted to the rooftop of the Chateau where you will help us feed the chimps lunch! All participants will need to wear gloves and a mask, which we will provide. Non-participants can watch but not touch the food.

Note that this area is on a third floor; an elevator is available to the second floor where the activity can be viewed, there are 12 additional steps to get to the launch pad.

Other things to note:

  • This experience is only held March through November.
  • Please dress for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes.
  • You will not have direct contact with the chimpanzees.
  • Chimps have the option to retreat to their villas out of sight at any time.

About Airbnb Animal Experiences

Airbnb Experiences go beyond the typical tours and classes. For experiences that include animals, Airbnb is committed to protecting their welfare.

These guidelines were created in consultation with World Animal Protection, an organization committed to improving the lives of animals. They apply to experiences involving wild animals in the wild and in captivity, as well as domesticated animals under human care. We believe all animals should be respected for their intrinsic value and role in the global ecosystem, so experiences that violate these guidelines or otherwise threaten the welfare and/or conservation of animals will be removed from Airbnb.

Won't You Help?

This project would not be possible without our many generous individual supporters and volunteers. We rely on donations to fulfill our mission, including caring for our existing residents and expanding the sanctuary to accommodate those chimpanzees still waiting in the lab.

Won’t you help us bring the remaining chimps to sanctuary by supporting Project Chimps today? Please donate today because...
