Amy

Amy2 July 2021

As the smallest chimp in Harmony villa, Amy is usually easy to spot. She’s full of energy and loves to play, both with her caregivers and her best friends Sarah and Loretta. Whenever they get new stuffed animal “babies”, you can usually bet that one of them will have it in their possession, and they typically rotate between the three of them on whose turn it is to play with the doll next. Often, she will run up to a caregiver with a very enthusiastic play stomp then go flying across the room expecting a game of chase.

Amy can also be a bit on the dramatic side, taking on some of the older and more dominant chimps in her group. She is definitely an instigator and likes to stir up trouble when things seem too calm and quiet. For being one of the smallest chimps in her group, it can be quite a sight to see her trying to rile up the biggest male, Kareem. One of her cutest quirks includes her eating habits: she’s a proper lady, taking the daintiest bites and always being the last to finish her food.

The Role of “Auntie” in Female Chimps

May 2, 2022

Chimps have these ambiguous female figures too! Growing up without their mom, our orphaned lab chimps rely even more heavily on the guidance of older influences.
Older female chimps who take young female groupmates under their metaphorical wing, I call “aunties.” But really, they’re just old ladies showing young girls the ropes.

Big Girls, Little Girls, Middle Girls: Female Chimps Learn From Each Other

March 11, 2022

When chimps come to sanctuary, they may be interacting with other chimps (or chimps of the opposite sex) for the first time. These interactions can be tricky because the chimps haven’t learned lessons that mom usually instills during childhood.
