Celebrating DAWN’s 33rd birthday! 

In the heart of the sanctuary, amidst the rustling leaves and gentle whispers of nature, a remarkable chimpanzee named Dawn is preparing to celebrate her 33rd birthday. Dawn’s infectious spirit, quirky routines, extraordinary weight-loss journey and solid friendships forged within her group (Side B of the Laurie & Carlee McGrath Chateau) are genuinely awe-inspiring. She has managed to inspire everyone who’s been lucky enough to see her transformation firsthand.

Quirky routines include Dawn’s mealtimes that are a carefully choreographed ritual. Regardless of her approach, she must find her place at the bottom left corner of the bedroom door before receiving her food. Another routine is her favorite training cue — a simple yet powerful gesture — “hand.” There is one thing that Dawn dislikes, however… firehose knots. 

Within her group, Lancelot has developed an undeniable fascination with her. Yet, Dawn’s playful interactions aren’t just limited to her admirer. Often, she finds herself caught up in lively interactions with the younger ladies of her group, truly embodying an inherent sense of playfulness. 

After over three decades in research, Dawn finally arrived at the sanctuary in June of 2022 and has undergone a remarkable transformation. With an impressive weight loss of 50 pounds, Dawn has certainly outdone herself in the realm of transformation. Previously subjected to the lowest levels due to her weight, Dawn now climbs and even hangs upside down like a bat, showcasing her newfound agility. 

In a beautiful twist of fate, Dawn shares her exact birthday with one of the care staff members, Lauren. Their shared birthday further reinforces their bond as the caregivers truly adore and commit to these amazing creatures.
