Celebrating RONALD’s 36th birthday!

Ronald.HS

Today, we’re honored to celebrate the birthday of a truly exceptional chimpanzee! Born May 4th, 1988, Ronald is one of the seniors living at Project Chimps. He’s also the father of three chimps at the sanctuary: Kennedy as well as identical twins Buttercup and Charisse

Living in Harmony villa, Ronald can look small in comparison to some of the larger chimps in his group. But, although he may be small in stature, his displays are quite impressive! He has a power all his own and he isn’t about to let anyone forget it.

When he first arrived in 2018 — after 30 years in research — Ronald was hesitant to take his breakfast and dinner from the hopper. Some of the females in his group would attempt to steal his food but recently he’s been developing more confidence. As time has passed, Ronald has gotten better and better at telling them “no” and holding onto his produce. Proud moments for his caregivers, to be sure.

Recently, his favorite treats have been the peanut butter cups he gets at breakfast and dinner. He also loves peas and enjoys them whether they’re fresh, frozen, or dried!

As an elder in his group, Ronald has also helped the other chimps find their place socially. He’s played an especially important role in helping Collin develop his position within the group’s hierarchy. As both are males, the two often test each other. For chimps, this is an important part of how they can each develop their confidence and social position.

Today, on May 4th, we hope you’ll join us in wishing Ronald a very happy 36th birthday! Consider snacking on some peas or peanut butter in his honor or sending him a gift from our Amazon Wishlist! Ronald, today we’re raising our own metaphorical peanut butter cups as a toast to you. Here’s hoping this will be your best year yet! Happy birthday!
