Chimp Trails: Hiking with Purpose
By Alyssa Burlison
Is trekking with chimpanzees in Africa on your bucket list? Or are you searching for a meaningful weekend getaway in the U.S.? The Project Chimps hiking trails in Blue Ridge, Georgia, offer a rewarding experience for animal lovers, eco-tourists, and nature enthusiasts alike.
These scenic trails have a requested $2 donation for entry, with all proceeds supporting Project Chimps, a nonprofit sanctuary for retired research chimpanzees. If you’re lucky, you might hear or even spot the chimps during your hike. Don’t forget to stop by the gift shop afterward for an “I Hiked the Chimp Trails” T-shirt—another great way to support the sanctuary.
I recently spent a weekend at the sanctuary’s Airbnb and explored the White Trail, Yellow Trail, and the Green Nature Walk. Here’s my experience as a female solo traveler hiking in Georgia.
White Trail: A Challenging Start
My first morning began at 6:00 AM with the most difficult trail: the White Trail. At 2.5 miles long and with an elevation gain of 469 feet, it quickly proved more intense than expected—especially compared to my usual flat Florida walks. As a native Texan, I wasn’t quite prepared for the elevation, and I hadn’t packed water or snacks. Lesson learned!
Despite the challenge, the trail was stunning. Towering pine and oak trees lined the path, and I even spotted a herd of deer and a groundhog. The highlight? Hearing the haunting, powerful calls of the chimpanzees echoing through the forest. It was a surreal reminder that this hike directly supports their care and rehabilitation.
Green Nature Walk: Family-Friendly and Educational
After the strenuous morning, I opted for a relaxing evening stroll on the Green Nature Walk. This 1.2-mile trail took about 20 minutes and was perfect for winding down. Along the way, I found educational signs about Georgia’s native species and primate conservation.

This trail is ideal for families with children. If you’re looking to swap screen time for outdoor learning, this easy, well-maintained path offers a fun and informative experience.
Yellow Trail: The Perfect Balance
On my final day, I visited the Yellow Trail, this time fully prepared with water, a protein bar, and bug spray. The 2.5-mile trail features a 561-foot elevation gain and is rated moderate. Thanks to my preparation, the hike was much more enjoyable—even with a few rest stops on the benches scattered throughout.
The trail led to the same scenic overlook as the White Trail, offering breathtaking views of the Peachtree Habitat below. I ended my hike at the koi pond near the trailhead, soaking in the peaceful surroundings.

Of all three trails, the Yellow Trail was my favorite. It struck the perfect balance between challenge and enjoyment—what I’d call the “Goldilocks” trail.
Trails with a Mission
Whether you’re an avid hiker or a casual stroller, Project Chimps Trails offer something for everyone. The White and Yellow Trails are perfect for those seeking a physical challenge and a deeper connection with nature. The Green Nature Walk is a gentle, educational option for families and beginners.
All trails are clearly marked, dog-friendly (on leash), and maintained by dedicated volunteers. Open from dawn to dusk, these trails are more than just a hike—they’re a chance to support chimpanzee conservation and experience ethical wildlife tourism in Georgia.
