Bobby

Bobby_July_2022

Bobby is the type of chimp caregivers call a “chimp’s chimp,” meaning he’s not particularly interested in human interaction. Instead, he prefers to seek out the company of fellow chimpanzees in Chateau B, making him socially conscious and politically minded. One of the handful of relationship connections at the sanctuary, Bobby’s mother Anna also lives at Project Chimps.

Bobby has solid relationships with everyone in his group, particularly Thomas and Prince. Whenever there’s conflict or a disagreement, Bobby is quick to get involved and provide backup as needed. When he’s not actively engaged in chimpanzee politics, he can often be found lounging around the cubbies with his feet propped up on the wall, using the closest object as a pillow. Whether that’s a blanket, stuffed animal, paper bag, or plastic toy, Bobby makes the most of what’s around him.

Bobby is one of a few chimps who are hesitant to go into the outdoor habitat. Since arriving in 2022, Bobby has only ventured out into the habitat a handful of times and usually opts to stay in the villa instead. However, recently he seems to have been gaining the courage to join his fellow groupmates in the habitat! He’s been spending more time in the tunnel leading to the outdoor habitat, but still seems to be waiting until he’s fully confident to take the plunge.

Chimp Chatter Featuring Bobby

Celebrate BOBBY’s 17th birthday!

January 26, 2024

Bobby is what you’d call a “chimps’s chimp.” He clearly prefers the company of his fellow chimpanzees over humans and that’s exactly what we like to see!

Meet Bobby – young and in charge

October 6, 2022

Born in 2007, Bobby is the youngest in his group of nine male chimps. He’s the last chimp, so far, to set foot in the sanctuary. If we numbered the chimps by their arrival seniority, Bobby would currently be #99.

Fun Facts

Bobby loves playing chase with his caregivers, but his version of “chase” is so turtle slow, it’s hard to notice when he’s actually initiating play or just walking around.

This project would not be possible without our many generous individual supporters and volunteers. We rely on donations to fulfill our mission, including caring for our existing residents and expanding the sanctuary to accommodate those chimpanzees still waiting in the lab.
