Jacob

Jacob July 2021

Jacob is regarded by his caregivers as one of the most intelligent chimps at Project Chimps—not only within his social group, but across the whole sanctuary. How do his caregivers know he’s one smart cookie? For one thing, he excels at removing obstructions from the chimp shift doors when caregivers shine a laser pointer on the object blocking the track.

He also solves puzzle enrichments with focus and expertise, and he tries his best to befriend all the chimps, especially the highest-ranking males by grooming them frequently. On top of this, being such a proficient trainer, his caregivers have started positive reinforcement training with Jacob to allow vet staff to spritz him with medical spray for helping wound healing.

This year, Jacob’s group moved back to their old stomping ground in Chateau “B” side. On the day of the big flip, Jacob was the first to figure out that it was moving day. Before his caregivers even started the shift, Jacob excitedly waited in the doorway for them to open the door. And, being the gentleman he is, he waited patiently for his last groupmate to hop through that door!

Nails Do Grow Back

July 2, 2020

A chimp that is playing and having a good time builds excitement levels that reach a certain threshold where it sometimes becomes aggressive behavior. Play then turns into chimps smacking each other. They are so strong that when their hands come down for a smack, they may nick each other. Sometimes a bigger wound can occur – like a fingernail might get pulled off.
