Justin

Justin is a middle-ranking chimp in his group of 19. He has really learned to bond with the 10 girls who were introduced to his group of nine males this past year. When the girls get upset, he is typically rushing to back them up and likes to redirect the negative attention towards his caregivers. We don’t mind though, as this smart strategy helps to prevent any escalation of bad feelings between group members.

Justin is one of our chimps that most enjoys his enrichment items. No matter what it is, he spends a lot of time interacting with it or trying to figure out the different challenges we present to the group each day. He particularly enjoys our stacker cups and pepper shakers!

Boy Meets Girl – Entry #8

October 13, 2020

The day started off with much brainstorming and reflection on how the introductions had gone so far. To recap, we have one group of mixed chimps and two groups of unmixed chimps. We could keep going by adding individuals to the mixed groups, but that could have resulted in anxiety in the separated groups as their numbers dwindled and all the higher-ranking chimps departed. Without the democracy of their leaders, the remaining chimps could have gotten out of hand – like unsupervised teenagers.
