Mandy

Mandy July 2021

Mandy has a distinctive light-toned face, big ears, and a freckle on the right side of her face. She can often be found spending time with older group mate Moonie. She’s also good friends with Arielle and lets her help move her from room so caregivers can clean by sitting in the door and reaching her hand out.

Mandy is one of the pickiest eaters we know – she’s the only chimp who turns down a banana! She’s also not a huge fan of pears or kiwis, and only likes apples if they’re not too red. Here in sanctuary, they have the luxury of being picky, and if that means keeping green apples in stock for Mandy while everyone else is happy with red, then so be it!

Recently, Mandy has been interacting with Roy through the mesh on the open-air porches. She’s also moving up in the ranks and the high-ranking males are showing her preferential treatment by letting her get her food while they sit next to her and threaten some of the other young female chimps.

Chimps Ahoy: Hierarchy and Roles – Part 1 of 3

August 22, 2022

Chimpanzees are complex. Their social group dynamics thrive off the strength of their interconnecting web of relationships known as hierarchy. At Project Chimps, caregivers use three “levels” of hierarchy to help them discuss such a dynamic web: high-ranking, mid-ranking, and low-ranking.

Chimps Ahoy: Hierarchy and Roles – Part 2 of 3

August 22, 2022

The Chimps Ahoy group was really fun to watch!  A majority of my time was spent watching a lot of grooming and napping—the two most common affiliative behaviors. This may seem like an uneventful behavior to some, but I got plenty of information on the relationships that the chimps had with each other.

From the beginning of my internship, we had our eyes on Justin and Rocko as possible enforcer candidates. Justin and Rocko are very dominant chimps that would usually be found around Kirk to show their high rank status.

The 2010s: Our Legacy for Research Chimps

December 23, 2019

As we swing our way into the second Roaring 20s, we look back at the accomplishments made for captive research chimpanzees in the 2010s.

In 2010, the European Union banned testing on great apes, a full five years before the United States would follow suit, making the U.S. the last country in the so-called “developed world” to end testing on chimpanzees.

This project would not be possible without our many generous individual supporters and volunteers. We rely on donations to fulfill our mission, including caring for our existing residents and expanding the sanctuary to accommodate those chimpanzees still waiting in the lab.
