Ray’s favorite times of the day are meal times. He doesn’t have a favorite food because he loves all food. Ray absolutely loves training. Since he is highly food motivated, he’s always ready to participate in an afternoon training session. Sometimes during these sessions, he will make a nest while patiently waiting for his turn. Ray also has been exploring the outdoor habitat more over time. In the past, he would go out only to come right back in. Now he will take his time outside, walking around with his group mates. He will even nap outside on the structures on sunny days. Ray is getting bolder with age — displaying more and asserting his dominance within his group.

The day started out routinely, with our team checking on the
chimps, feeding their breakfast and cleaning their enclosures. But then the radios start squawking as the chatter between caregivers becomes an excited cacophony.

The message finally became clear: “Leo is outside!”
