Rusty

Rusty2 July 2021

Rusty is a chimp that is more concerned with the simple things in life. When his group is in the middle of a disagreement or roaming the habitat, Rusty can usually be found somewhere out of the way. He may be inside taking a nap, examining his caregiver’s boots, or playing peek-a-boo with his caregivers or even by himself.

Despite being what his caregivers would describe as the “quintessential retired old man,” Rusty has the spirit of a much younger chimp. He’s always asking for attention and juice and likes to play with people as they walk past him in left bedroom. He won’t go out into the habitat, but he sits outside on the porches watching the others from a distance.

In contrast with some of the other male chimps, Rusty is an ideal playmate for many of the younger girls. While some chimps can get too excited and accidentally upset their playmate, Rusty is great at knowing how far is too far. Rusty is also very vocal and expressive about his wants by pointing or letting out his famous “Rusty Roar.” Mandy is particularly attuned to this, finding and giving him the attention he’s looking for! He’s energetic and a little sassy, and is also one of the most unique personalities at our sanctuary.

Chimps Ahoy: Hierarchy and Roles – Part 2 of 3

August 22, 2022

The Chimps Ahoy group was really fun to watch!  A majority of my time was spent watching a lot of grooming and napping—the two most common affiliative behaviors. This may seem like an uneventful behavior to some, but I got plenty of information on the relationships that the chimps had with each other.
