Dog Days of Summer at Project Chimps

Dog-Days-of-Summer-2-1

By Emmett Johnson

Project Chimps cares for all animals in need and tries to allow space for all animals to shine. Here, we incorporate all animals into the mix. During the summer, Project Chimps hosts an event called Dog Days of Summer, where dogs from different rescue groups come to socialize to try and be adopted. I had a chance to interview one of the groups that participated this summer.

Castoff Pet Rescue

The pet rescue currently has twenty-four dogs that need homes. Castoff Rescue brought five dogs to the event. They brought dogs named Bailey, Captain, Dexter, Cricket, and Ranger. Each of these dogs is energetic and adores human affection. Part of Castoff Rescue’s mission is to match companion animals with loving, life-long homes.

While out to visit the event, the care team from Castoff Rescue showed love towards each dog they brought. They provided ample amounts of water and rest areas for the dogs to chill in. The care team at Project Chimps

During Dog Days of Summer, there are leashes and space for prospective owners to take the dogs on a walk around the sanctuary. There were also treats and toys to play with and train the dogs. Interacting with the dog allows the pet owner to bond with them and form a connection.

Benefits of a Furry Friend

The connection between humans and dogs traces back 11,000 years. Initially, dogs became domesticated because they came to humans for meat to eat. Since then, our bond has been inseparable because dogs are loyal and loving.

One of the benefits of owning a dog is that it can help to reduce stress. A dog will always be there to pet after a long day or when a stressful situation occurs. The pet can help relieve stress and anxiety as it sits there and takes all the love from its owner. As loyal companions, dogs will never abandon their owners.

Caring for a Dog

Dogs need lots of outdoor time and require socialization. There are many areas to take pet dogs to help animals and humans socialize. Parks and trails are full of other furry friends and their owners. Letting a dog play and sniff with others helps them become friendly pets and allows the owners to interact with each other. This study shows that 40% of pet owners reported receiving one or more types of social support through a pet they met.

Long walks can also help its owner get outside and experience nature. The dog may just want to sit outside with someone if it is old. Project Chimps has a koi pond with a field that offers a valuable place to take a dog. The field and nature trails are perfect spaces for a young puppy to run around.

If the dog is older, it may want to sit outside and relax. While the older dog is gaining benefits from this outdoor time, the pet owner can also get the full experience from the koi pond through water meditation. For young and old dogs, Project Chimps offers a space for everyone.
