Meet Jason: Bo’s right-hand man

Jason hmm

By Gregory Rodriguez

Jason loves to collaborate

“What’s cool about Jason is that he wants whatever is going to be best for his group, especially the females,” says caretaker Alyssa Newberry.

Drama seems to follow Jason. He is currently at work sorting out becoming the new alpha’s right-hand. Jason was a part of Stirlene’s efforts to usurp the current alpha in the group, Bo. Bo spent some time away from them and Jason had an opportunity to see whether Stirlene could be a good alpha.

Ultimately Jason went back to earn Bo’s trust, because Stirlene proved himself not to be a fit alpha. After a long time of reconciliation, about 9 months according to Alyssa, Bo and Jason decided to chase out Stirlene. “It was just a really neat moment of these two chimps finally coming together on getting the same page,” says Alyssa. And thus, Jason secured his position as right-hand man.

Jason is also extremely clever

Alyssa shared one of the many things she finds fascinating about Jason – his intellect. According to a study run in Japan, 5 year old chimps are just as smart as average adult humans.”

As the right-hand man, Jason often helps Bo when it comes to drama involving the other boys in the social group. “He is very strategic in where he puts himself in fights,” Alyssa comments. Jason will sneak up on the other boys while they deal with Bo.

Jason is a huge sweetheart

He thoroughly enjoys playing around with care staff and the other chimps. “He’s a very bubbly chimp; he has a very sweet personality” says Alyssa.

He plays with almost every member of his family. Jason facilitates lots of grooming within the social group. He is a very active chimp who enjoys the days outside.

Jason is also the oldest in his social group, he turned 20 on September 27th. But there are chimps in their 40s, so Jason is still quite young!
