Shannon, a dedicated Project Chimps volunteer, recently tackled the course with her husband and a friend. She hadn’t realized it was open to the public before volunteering—but once she found out she could join for just $75 (and just $35 or youth groups), she jumped at the chance.

While the course isn’t towering, it still packs a challenge. Shannon’s favorite section involved crossing a series of suspended tires, requiring balance and focus. Another standout? The balance beam, which tested her coordination and nerve. Constructed primarily from recycled fire hoses, the course is eco-friendly but tough on the hands—Shannon recommends bringing gloves for a smoother ride.

Whether you’re 8 or 80, the Chimp Challenge Course is designed to be inclusive. Shannon, 50, and her husband, 60, completed it with ease—and she’s confident kids would love it too. After finishing the course, participants can explore the scenic hiking trails and learn more about the sanctuary’s mission to rescue and care for retired research chimpanzees.
