Chimpcation is Eco-Friendly Volunteering
By Alyssa Burlison
Looking for a vacation that’s educational, fun, and environmentally conscious? Project Chimps offers all that and more with their immersive chimpcation experience. This one-of-a-kind getaway lets you spend a week volunteering at a chimpanzee sanctuary nestled in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia.
During your chimpcation, you’ll engage in meaningful conservation work, enjoy exclusive conversations with chimpanzee experts, and explore the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge area—all while supporting retired research chimpanzees.
Meet the Chimpcation Family: Andrew, Patricia, and Charlotte
I recently sat down with three enthusiastic chimpcationers—Andrew, Patricia, and Charlotte—who had just arrived from Baltimore, Maryland. Their journey began when a friend working at Project Chimps introduced them to this unique vacation opportunity. For Charlotte, a college student majoring in anthrozoology (the study of human-animal relationships), the chimpcation was a perfect fit. Her family saw it as a meaningful way to support her interests while enjoying a memorable escape.
Where to Stay During Your Chimpcation
Although Project Chimps offers an on-site lodging, the family opted for a nearby rental just a mile from the sanctuary. “We needed a three-bedroom,” Patricia explained. If you’re planning your own chimpcation, Blue Ridge offers a variety of accommodations to suit every traveler:
Whether you prefer a cozy cabin, hotel comfort, or a nature-filled camping experience, there’s something for everyone.
Bonding with the Chimps
When asked if they had connected with any specific chimpanzees, the family lit up. Andrew shared a heartwarming moment with Luke, a 38-year-old chimpanzee who curiously approached the window to greet them. “He was extremely curious,” Andrew recalled.

Beyond meeting the chimps, the family also participated in enrichment activities—an essential part of chimpanzee care. These activities mimic natural behaviors and keep the chimps mentally stimulated. One favorite project involved building artificial termite mounds filled with applesauce, allowing the chimps to “fish” for treats just as they would in the wild. Charlotte especially enjoyed this hands-on opportunity to contribute to the chimps’ well-being.
Eco-Friendly Adventures in Blue Ridge
My interview took place on the family’s second day at the sanctuary, and they still had plenty of eco-friendly fun ahead. Activities included:
- Hiking scenic chimp trails
- Preparing nutritious meals for the chimps
- Touring the sanctuary grounds
The chimpcation package also includes one free day for exploring the area. This family planned to go white water rafting—a thrilling way to round out their adventure.
Why Choose a Chimpcation?
A chimpcation at Project Chimps is more than just a vacation—it’s a chance to make a difference. You’ll gain hands-on experience caring for retired research chimpanzees, learn from expert caregivers, and enjoy the breathtaking landscapes of Blue Ridge, Georgia.
Whether you’re an animal lover, a student of anthrozoology, or simply seeking a meaningful escape, a chimpcation offers an unforgettable blend of purpose and adventure.
