Betty

Betty July 2021

Betty has gone through a major transformation during her time at Project Chimps, and we couldn’t be prouder! When she first arrived in 2018, Betty was so shy and reserved that she almost seemed more like an observer than an active participant engaging with her group.

Not anymore, however! With time, Betty has become much more assertive, particularly during mealtimes. She eagerly awaits her chow and produce, displaying a newfound confidence that’s delightful to see. Her caregivers say that she’s continuing to gain confidence within her group and making sure everyone knows it.

Her best friend at the sanctuary is Harriett, but recently she’s been expanding her friendship circle and has been spending a lot more time with Zana, who’s a good friend to have on your side. She likes to carry around animal plushies from time to time, particularly the ones that look like baby chimps!

Stuffed animals at the sanctuary usually only last a few days. This is thanks to chimps being so strong. Because of this, some chimps here at the sanctuary aren’t allowed to have fragile toys. But some chimps have much more of a gentle touch when it comes to their toys.

Treating ex lab chimps—who have undergone countless procedures before retiring at sanctuary—is complicated. Staff at Project Chimps are highly sensitive to chimp residents who are averse to needles, mistrusting of humans, or have other hold-ups stemming from their traumatic past.

This project would not be possible without our many generous individual supporters and volunteers. We rely on donations to fulfill our mission, including caring for our existing residents and expanding the sanctuary to accommodate those chimpanzees still waiting in the lab.
