Celebrate EMMA’s 19th birthday!

Emma on porch (India Sloan, 6-10-23)

The next time you visit us here in Morganton, Georgia, pay close attention. If you’re on the tour and feel like you’re being watched, there’s a good chance Emma has her eye on you!

Caregivers often joke that Emma is plotting something big. She’s a very clever and crafty chimp and there are numerous examples of that mischievousness. But using her brain isn’t limited to just mischief. She absolutely loves training and will appear out of nowhere when she sees a caregiver with a training pouch. Furthering her “mysterious” behavior, Emma is also known for engaging “ghost mode” where she drapes herself in a blanket and walks around. In short, she keeps her caregivers on their toes… and with smiles on their faces.

Regarded as one of the smartest chimps in the sanctuary, Emma is always eager for new challenges and is routinely one of the first to figure out new puzzles or enrichment items.

She loves oranges and has invented a new way of eating them. She bites a small hole in the rind and proceeds to hollow out the entire orange with her finger. During cleaning, care staff often think they’ve found an untouched orange only to discover a husk that’s been picked clean. Leave it to such a smart chimp like Emma to innovate new fun ways of doing simple tasks!

Today, January 30, is Emma’s 19th birthday! She would love to receive blankets from our Amazon Wish List if you’re interested in sending her a gift.
