Celebrating GENESIS’ 19th birthday!
Spring is the season of growth and new beginnings, bringing fresh starts and new possibilities. At Project Chimps, it’s also a great time to celebrate the growth and possibilities happening right here at the sanctuary. That’s why today, on April 4th, it seems especially fitting to celebrate Genesis’ 19th birthday!
When Genesis first arrived at Project Chimps, she was known for her timid and uncertain personality. Instead of spending time with her fellow chimps, Genesis spent most of her time alone. However, that’s no longer the case! After overcoming an illness requiring her separation from her group early last year, Genesis has been in great health.
She’s also grown into a much more outgoing and self-assured chimp, particularly with the alpha, Bo. These two have formed a special friendship over the past few years, and it’s truly heartwarming to see their bond. When Genesis is stressed by the behavior of one of the other chimps, she will often seek out Bo. He then offers reassurance: a hug, some breathy pants, or even just sitting there letting her yell into his ear.
Genesis is one of the most frequent nest builders at the sanctuary with a talent for creating giant, comfy beds. She loves bedding of all kinds, whether it’s hay, wood wool, paper, or blankets. She’ll even gather up her nests in big armfuls and bring them with her from one room to another! She also loves the outdoor habitat and continues to explore more of it all the time.
Earlier this year, Genesis’ inspiring growth into a more outgoing, self-assured chimp won her the title of Most Improved Chimpanzee! Her newfound confidence is especially evident during mealtimes, eagerly asserting herself— even when it may not be the wisest choice!
Knowing she’s dealt with anxiety since we first got to know her, seeing Genesis grow has been a sincere joy. We’re so proud of her and can’t wait to see what strides she’ll continue to make!
