Kareem

Kareem July 2021

Kareem is one of our more well-known chimps because of his size and his gentle personality. Kareem is a great alpha that only uses his size to remind his group mates that he is in charge. He loves to play with all his groupmates but mostly plays with the younger girls of the group. He also loves to play with his caregivers.

Kareem has been extra busy with gaining two new members to the group! He has been a great mediator for Kennedy and Danner with the other Harmony chimps. Kareem has always loved playing and has really enjoyed getting to play with Kennedy and Danner, although we have noticed that he seemed to get a little jealous when the other males get more attention from the 2 new boys than he does.

Kareem’s signature “play with me” move is a stomp of the foot and then pounding the floor with both fists. If you’re his caregiver and you receive this play signal, you better tighten your shoelaces, because he’s going to want to play chase around the villa and he does not get tired!

Kareem is also featured in his very own children’s book, Hope for Kareem.

About the book: Kareem was a happy baby chimp, playing with his friends at the Universal Primate Lab. But one day, he’s taken to a place where he’s put through medical experiments that hurt him. With the help of his friend Hope, a caterpillar, Kareem finds the strength to survive this terrible ordeal and find a safe home at Project Chimps. From Studying Chimps to Seeing Chimps

March 27, 2022

Studying chimps in her textbooks, India ultimately discovered, does not compare to meeting them in real life. She remembers her first day at Project Chimps clearly, because on this day she came face to face with a chimp for the first time.

Big Girls, Little Girls, Middle Girls: Female Chimps Learn From Each Other

March 11, 2022

When chimps come to sanctuary, they may be interacting with other chimps (or chimps of the opposite sex) for the first time. They may fail to understand social norms, and feel awkward, unsure, or anxious around other chimps. These interactions can be tricky because the chimps haven’t learned lessons that mom usually instills during childhood.

Her work combines a colorful, expansive forest scene with elements of Project Chimps’ outdoor habitat. It also features its namesake, Kareem, one of the sanctuary’s most notable residents. “The chimps have…
