Kareem

Kareem July 2021

Kareem is one of our more well-known chimps because of his size and his gentle personality. Kareem is a great alpha that only uses his size to remind his group mates that he is in charge. He loves to play with all his groupmates but mostly plays with the younger girls of the group. He also loves to play with his caregivers.

Kareem has been extra busy with gaining two new members to the group! He has been a great mediator for Kennedy and Danner with the other Harmony chimps. Kareem has always loved playing and has really enjoyed getting to play with Kennedy and Danner, although we have noticed that he seemed to get a little jealous when the other males get more attention from the 2 new boys than he does.

Kareem’s signature “play with me” move is a stomp of the foot and then pounding the floor with both fists. If you’re his caregiver and you receive this play signal, you better tighten your shoelaces, because he’s going to want to play chase around the villa and he does not get tired!

Kareem is also featured in his very own children’s book, Hope for Kareem.

About the book: Kareem was a happy baby chimp, playing with his friends at the Universal Primate Lab. But one day, he’s taken to a place where he’s put through medical experiments that hurt him. With the help of his friend Hope, a caterpillar, Kareem finds the strength to survive this terrible ordeal and find a safe home at Project Chimps. Chimp Chatter Featuring Kareem

One Chimp’s Journey to Sanctuary – part two

December 27, 2018

Kareem’s story starts with the heart-wrenching fact that, like many chimpanzees who were born in research facilities, he was pulled from his mother at just a few days old. It’s difficult to think about the devastation that Kareem’s mother must have endured when her baby was pulled from her loving arms. Caregivers swaddled him in diapers and placed him in the lab’s chimpanzee nursery.

One Chimp’s Journey to Sanctuary – part one

December 22, 2018

Kareem was only 5 years old and living at the now-closed Laboratory for Experimental Medicine and Surgery in Primates (LEMSIP) in New York City. It was 1994 and a compassionate caregiver named Nancy was trying to lure Kareem back into his small cage after a day of innocent play in the lab’s nursery playroom. Kareem was tired of going back into a tiny cage each time his play sessions were over, so he held back.

This project would not be possible without our many generous individual supporters and volunteers. We rely on donations to fulfill our mission, including caring for our existing residents and expanding the sanctuary to accommodate those chimpanzees still waiting in the lab.
