A Weekend Getaway in Blue Ridge

Blue Ridge downtown

By Alyssa Burlison

As an animal lover and avid traveler, my TikTok feed is filled with dreamy eco-lodges—from giraffe-viewing suites in Kenya to kangaroo encounters in Australia. But did you know you can have a similar experience right here in the U.S.? Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia, Project Chimps offers a one-of-a-kind Airbnb stay inside a chimpanzee sanctuary. That’s right—you can sleep just steps away from 101 rescued chimps. I came for the primates, but I left with a deep love for Blue Ridge.

Staying at the Project Chimps Cabin

After landing at Chattanooga Airport, I drove about 1 hour and 45 minutes to reach the sanctuary. Check-in was seamless—no need to coordinate with staff or wait around. The cabin is a shared space: the downstairs functions as the sanctuary’s office and staff dormitory, while the upstairs hosts guest rooms.

My room was cozy and private, with a shared bathroom. The jungle-themed decor was a delightful touch—think queen-sized bed with leafy prints, framed chimp portraits, and rainforest vibes. It was clean, safe, and eco-conscious, which made me feel right at home.

On-Site Activities at Project Chimps

I spent my first full day exploring the sanctuary grounds. Right behind the Airbnb is a trailhead that leads to a scenic overlook with breathtaking mountain views—and yes, I spotted a few chimps!

The main trail took about two hours and got steep quickly, but there are easier options too. A flat nature walk offers educational signs about chimpanzees and Georgia’s native plants. As a beginner hiker, I appreciated the variety and well-marked paths.

One of the highlights was the behind-the-scenes sanctuary tour. My guide introduced me to the chimps’ habitats and shared stories about their personalities. Six new chimps had just arrived, and it was heartwarming to hear how they were adjusting to their new home.

If you want a more hands-on experience, check out Project Chimps’ “Chimpcation” program, which lets you volunteer during your stay.

Exploring Downtown Blue Ridge

On day two, I ventured into Downtown Blue Ridge—a charming mountain town filled with boutique shops, local eateries, and outdoor adventures. One must-do is the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, a 2–4 hour train ride through the mountains and along the Toccoa River. I didn’t have time this trip, but it’s now on my travel bucket list.

I did make time for dessert at “The Sweet Shoppe of the South.” The cupcakes were divine, and the shop’s cozy vibe made it a perfect end to the day.

Final Stop: Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest

Before heading back to the airport, I stopped at the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. I strolled along the river and watched white water rafters tackle the rapids. Some fellow guests were gearing up to raft, but with a flight to catch, I opted to stay dry. If rafting isn’t your thing, the forest also offers hiking, horseback riding, and fishing.

Why You Should Visit Blue Ridge and Project Chimps

Blue Ridge, Georgia, is a hidden gem for nature lovers, animal enthusiasts, and eco-conscious travelers. Staying at the Project Chimps Airbnb gives you a rare opportunity to support wildlife conservation while enjoying mountain views, outdoor adventures, and small-town charm.
